This is part four of a multi-part keynote I co-created and delivered with Orin Thomas. This myth is near to my heart as I AM A MANAGER (team lead really) and I am all about working in IT. Lets just say I kinda “fell into management” and an opportunity was presented to me.
As you’ll see in this video installment – Orin and I have lots of thoughts in this area. In case you didn’t know – Orin is one of my direct reports. I chose the Management route in IT as it was offered up to me as one of the next challenges in my career: build a team of technical experts focusing on the IT Pro / Sysadmin community and have them engage / create technical content to solve their problems. I realized this was one opportunity for me to achieve SCALE (and hire people that were SMARTER than me). Orin chose to remain an expert and keeps his expertise at a world class level. Orin and I BOTH agree that he would not be happy as a manager nor would anyone reporting to him. 😉
For more details on our thoughts on this topic, to learn about “the Peter principle” and some strategies on how to survive and thrive in EITHER of these career paths – have a look at this video.
I hope you liked this installment of this multi-part keynote. One more final one to go in order to wrap up the series. Sorry about taking so long for this one – it was in my drafts and somehow I got distracted from finishing off the scheduling of it. Don’t worry – the final installment is already scheduled and ready to go. 😉
